Fungal nails: Get access to various treatment options and expert advice

Unsightly, persistent and painful. Fungal-infected nails are common and once present can be very hard to shift. We all have fungus present in our bodies from the day we are born. Typically our body’s immune system has a continuous battle on our skin and around the nails. Most of the time an equilibrium exists, and the fungus and bacteria are kept under control. However, when the environment on the feet changes or the foot is exposed to large amounts of external fungus, an “infection” can occur. Fungus loves a dark, warm and moist environment, and the feet can provide this, especially when shoes and socks are worn, the feet get damp or sweat, or the temperature changes. Combine this with trips to the gym’s changing rooms, swimming pools or hotel rooms, the fungus can flourish especially in and around the nails. Treatments available for fungal nails – Once the fungal nail, known as onychomycosis, develops, it can be very hard to eradicate. This condition often requires intervention by podiatrists. There are various treatment options available, including nail trimming and debridement, topical creams and lotions, tablets and laser. A decision on which of the above is best depends on how long the infection has been present, how many nails are involved and how severe the condition is. Our podiatrists will discuss the most appropriate options so that an informed decision can be made. One of the quickest and most effective solutions is the fungal nail laser. This is typically pain-free, involves a few sessions and its effectiveness has been scientifically proven. Bio Podiatry podiatrists are not only experienced but also received extra training with Sydney Podiatric Surgeon Dr Damien Lafferty.
