Achilles tendonitis / tendonosis: Treating a condition caused by abnormal use or overuse
Achilles tendonitis is actually mainly two conditions and more accurately known as achilles paratenonitis or achilles tendonosis.
The achilles tendon and its paratenon are very important structures that can become traumatised by abnormal use or overuse. A region of the achilles tendon has a poor blood supply that can further predispose the tendon to irritation and pain. As we age our soft tissue does not stretch as much and can become damaged and degenerated.
How we can help – Bio Podiatry podiatrists are excellently positioned to assess the achilles tendon to enable a treatment plan to be instigated. This can involve stretching and strengthening exercises, shockwave therapy, splints and even orthotics if a poor function is part of the cause. Various injectables are also available; however, corticosteroids should never be injected into a tendon.
