PODIATRY CONDITIONS

Sports injury: Pain relief for the professional or the weekend warrior

With today’s busy schedules and our desire to stay physically fit, injuries can develop.

As our feet are the first point of contact, the feet and lower leg commonly become strained and injuries can result. These may be simple overuse injuries or a result of complex mechanical issues. At Bio Podiatry, our podiatrists are expertly trained to diagnose sports injuries, set out a treatment plan and instigate that plan. This can involve manual therapies, physical therapies, stretching and strengthening programs, use of shockwave therapy or prescription of orthotics.

When more complex and/or chronic conditions occur, sports injuries will require specialist assessment by our podiatrists to evaluate any underlying abnormal biomechanics or function that may be leading to the condition.

These conditions may involve tendon damage, joint overload and pain, skin friction conditions or pain in specific locations such as the heel, achilles tendon, ankle or the big toe joints.

Some examples of conditions are:

  • Achilles tendonitis / tendinosis
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Shin Splints
  • Stress Fractures
  • Patellae/knee pain.

If the condition is linked to poor structure and function, more specialised care may be required, including shockwave therapy or orthotics, to allow for redistribution of forces, that is, to better balance the forces going through the damaged site.
