Shockwave therapy: Proven advanced therapy to help the body heal itself
As science develops, more effective devices and interventions become available. A recent advancement is the radial shockwave therapy device. It is now used by sports doctors, physiotherapists and podiatrists.
The body has an ability to heal itself; however, in certain conditions, the damaged and painful area becomes “stagnant” and the body cannot heal the area. Scar tissue, degenerated tissue and certain negative biochemicals can build up. This stagnation can lead to many chronic conditions that are seen in the feet, such as:
- Plantar fasciitis/osis
- Achilles tendonitis/osis
- Posterior tibial tendonosis
- Post-operative scar tissue.
How does shockwave therapy work? When these foot conditions develop, the body needs a kick start to stimulate healing. When the shockwave device is used it transmits a high-intensity soundwave through the tissues via a handheld probe. This soundwave has three main effects:
- Analgesia (pain reduction)
- Reduction in chronic inflammation
- Stimulation of new blood supply to produce long-term healing.
There have been many quality research papers dedicated to shockwave therapy, and this modality has delivered excellent results, especially when combined with strengthening and stretching programs, and orthotics if poor structure and function exist.
At Bio Podiatry our podiatrists assess your condition first and discuss with you if shockwave therapy is a treatment option that can be used.
