Orthotics: Focusing on options that are comfortable, fit in your shoes and work
Repetitive forces are placed on the foot and lower leg throughout the day. Under situations with the foot functioning within normal parameters, the forces are absorbed and problems do not occur. However, when the foot and lower leg do not function as designed, forces can build up and damage can occur. Combine this abnormal motion with the repetitive steps of sport and work, chronic aches and pains may result. The typical treatment of manual and physical therapy may not be able to resolve the issue.
During the initial consultation our podiatrists assess the structure and function of the lower leg through measurement and gait analysis. A diagnosis is made and a treatment plan, subsequently advised.
Functional orthoses, known as orthotics, may be recommended to allow the forces to be correctly distributed, therefore permitting a pain-free return to activities.
Multiple types of orthotics – The prescription and manufacture of orthotics are specialised skills that our podiatrists possess. A review is always arranged to ensure the orthotics are comfortable and achieve the desired result.
Orthotics come in three basic types:
- Off the shelf
- Partially customised
- Fully customised.
The decision as to which one is appropriate is made jointly between the podiatrist and the client/patient to ensure the correct device at the correct price point is chosen.
State of the art orthotics – Fully customised devices are now an art and a science. The foot is 3D scanned and the devices are produced via computerised assisted design (CAD) and computerised aided manufacture (CAM), resulting in orthotics that are slim and lightweight, function well and last long-term.
