Radial shockwave therapy is a relatively new innovation in the treatment of sports injuries and foot and lower leg pain, with research showing a 90% to 95% success rate.
It is known as extracorporeal shockwave therapy, but it is often simply called shockwave therapy.
Shockwave therapy utilises acoustic sound waves to stimulate the healing of damaged tissues. These sound waves interact with the soft tissues leading to a stimulation of the body’s own immune system to reduce inflammation and allow healing.
Shockwave therapy is particularly effective in long-term problems such as achilles tendonosis or plantar fasciosis. It can stimulate the tissues that have often become stagnant and slow to heal. New blood vessels are encouraged to grow and the sluggish healing process is kicked started.
Shockwave therapy typically involves 2 to 4 sessions, with each session lasting 20 to 30 minutes. In most cases the treatment is pain-free, although there might be a very short-term increase in symptoms in the 24- to 48-hour period following the appointments.
At Sydney’s Bio Allied Health (Podiatry), we are trained in the use of shockwave therapy, ensuring safe and excellent results are achieved.
