Stress fractures: what they are and why they occur

A stress fracture can be a very uncomfortable and painful injury. It can occur anywhere there is overuse, but it most commonly occurs in the lower limb due to impact and weight-bearing activities.

Unfortunately, a stress fracture can be misdiagnosed or overlooked, as it often won’t appear on an X-ray when your pain begins. It can take several weeks before any signs of injury appear on an X-ray.

What is a stress fracture? A stress fracture is a repetitive injury that often occurs when you have done too much too soon or have had a change in activities.

When our bodies begin to feel a change or extra load, our bones will rebuild to become stronger to take on the added pressure. However, during this process, we have a moment of weakness as our body removes bone to make room for the new bony growth. It is at this time that a stress fracture can occur as we may not give our body adequate rest to allow for the new bony re-structure.

Common areas for stress fractures to occur are within our shins and feet. A visit to a podiatrist is recommended if you are experiencing:

  • pain during any activity
  • tenderness when touching the area
  • night pain
  • swelling.

At Sydney’s Bio Allied Health (Podiatry), we can do a full biomechanical assessment and form a rehabilitation program to get you back on your feet and doing what you love pain-free!
