Chronic venous insufficiency

Are you suffering from tired, aching and heavy legs at the end of the day? Have you noticed skin changes or swelling to your lower limbs?

You may have chronic venous insufficiency (CVI), which is a common lower limb progressive disorder. CVI can present in many different ways.

This may include:

  • swelling, particularly around your ankles
  • varicose veins
  • spider veins
  • skin colour
  • texture changes.

CVI can cause pain, discomfort, a feeling of heaviness or “wooden” leg at the end of the day. It can also progress into more serious complications, which is what your podiatrist can help you prevent!

What causes CVI? There are several risk factors for CVI, including:

  • family history
  • gender (female)
  • pregnancy
  • older age
  • obesity
  • trauma
  • a sedentary lifestyle.

These risk factors can cause a reflux of blood. Instead of the blood flowing back to your heart (where it needs to go), it can pool in the lower limb and cause all of the symptoms listed above.

What will my podiatrist do? At your first appointment your podiatrist will do a full lower limb health assessment, which includes a blood flow analysis. Depending on your results on the day, a personalised treatment plan will be developed.

What does the treatment plan look like? Treatment for CVI may include:

  • an exercise program
  • compression stockings
  • elevation
  • education on skin care and footwear.

If deemed necessary, a referral to your GP may be required for further investigation.

It is important not to diagnose and treat CVI yourself! Some people may not be able to perform certain exercises or wear compression garments, so book your appointment today.

At Sydney’s Bio Podiatry, our podiatrists are well-versed in CVI pathogenesis, diagnosis and management. We look forward to seeing you soon. Heavy legs can be a thing of the past!
