Back to school: shoe advice and feet assessment

Wake up alarms, lunches made and getting kids out the door. That’s right, kids are back to school.

As children’s feet grow the correct fitting for their shoes is essential. There is a large variation in the styles and functions of school shoes.

School shoes checklist – Some points that need to be considered are:

  • formal or casual style
  • length of the foot
  • width of the foot
  • “foot type”: flat foot, high arch, etc.

School shoes should ideally have:

  • firm heel counter
  • adequately wide toe box
  • cushioning insole
  • hard wearing sole
  • arch support.

Specialist school shoe fitting shops can help with the fitting, and it is advised that you visit one of these shops to get appropriate advice.

Time for a feet assessment – This is also a good time to review your child’s feet to ensure adequate control of any poor function is identified and dealt with.

Like braces and plates for teeth, it is important to identify poor foot function or deformity and have these dealt with while they are young. A child’s feet can be mouldable and malleable and there is a short window to deal with these issues before they become fixed and lead to permanent problems.

At Sydney’s Bio Podiatry, our experienced and knowledgeable podiatrists can conduct the assessment of your child’s feet and instigate any treatment should it be required. Shoe advice will also be discussed during the consultation.
