Bunions: Intervene early to stop this painful and unsightly condition

Approximately 20% of the population suffer from bunions. As well as being common, bunions can be painful and unsightly. The medical term for bunions is hallux valgus, and this condition is mainly caused by genetics. Bunions are often progressive and if left untreated they will typically become more marked and lead to secondary problems. These secondary problems often result in more pain than the actual bunion. Examples are hammertoes, flat feet, arthritis, neuromas, corns and callus. Other factors can also be involved in the development of bunions, and this is where Bio Allied Health podiatrists can help. Our team assesses the foot to see which interventions might be possible to slow the progression of the bunion and alleviate the pain. Treatment options for bunions – Strengthening and stretching exercises, mobilisation, pads, orthotics and shoe advice are just some of the options to treat bunions. Early intervention is essential to prevent secondary issues. If the bunions are large and painful, and secondary issues are already leading to problems, surgery can be discussed. Surgical correction of bunions has markedly improved in recent years. Our podiatrists can discuss this with you and, if you wish, refer you to a foot and ankle specialist known as a podiatric surgeon.
